Las restricciones son parte del diseño.

Una placa, un sensor o una máquina se comprenden mejor cuando sus límites se tratan como material de diseño.

01

A constraint is information

Board area, layer count, heat, current, bandwidth, noise and manufacturability are often presented as obstacles to an ideal design. In practice, they define the real design problem. Ignoring them early does not remove them; it only makes them more expensive to discover later.

Treating constraints as inputs creates a clearer architecture. It reveals which trade-offs are fundamental and which can be changed by a better layout, component choice, sensing strategy or control approach.

02

Map the physical limits before optimising

For a PCB, the map can include stack-up, return paths, via structures, flex regions, thermal paths and assembly rules. For a sensor or machine, it can include range, resolution, latency, backlash, vibration and the conditions under which measurements stop being reliable.

The map does not need to be complicated. It needs to expose the limits that could invalidate a decision before time is spent optimising the wrong variable.

03

Good trade-offs are explicit

Miniaturisation may increase routing and thermal difficulty. Faster switching may improve power density while increasing sensitivity to parasitics and layout. More autonomy may reduce operator workload while demanding stronger sensing and failure handling.

A useful design record explains which trade-off was chosen, what evidence supported it and what remains uncertain. This makes iteration faster because the next person can see the reasoning, not only the final geometry or code.

04

Most problems sit between disciplines

The most revealing questions often sit between disciplines: where power integrity affects sensing, where mechanical packaging affects antenna or board layout, or where control assumptions meet actuator limits.

That is why I treat constraints as design material. They are not the part that prevents engineering from being elegant; they are the part that gives an engineering decision meaning.
